The purpose of this study was to examine depressive symptomatology in three
Latino groups: Mexicans living in Mexico City, Latino immigrants living in
the South Bay area of San Francisco, and Puerto Ricans living on the islan
d of Puerto Rico. The Spanish version of the Center for Epidemiological Stu
dies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used as part of a larger study on stress
and coping. The levels of depressive symptomatology in all three Latino gro
ups were significantly higher than those reported in other Latino samples a
nd in White Americans. Mexican immigrants reported the highest levels of de
pressive symptomatology.
