The precise mechanisms by which self-reactive T cells ore activated an d tolerance to self antigens is broken ore. still not fully understood . Here, Iqbal S. Grewal and colleagues discuss how the study of geneti cally manipulated animals has increased our understanding of how autor eactive T cells are activated in various models of autoimmunity.
