The influence of concentration and temperature on the luminescence pro
perties of the Eu3+ activated X-1-Y2SiO5 are investigated for the firs
t time. For high Eu3+ concentration, a cross relaxation process betwee
n Eu3+ ions results in the quenching of D-5(1) emission. At low temper
ature and high concentration, the excitation transfer between Eu3+ ion
s in the two sites enables the fluorescence of site 2 disappears entir
ely. In addition, the samples showed some interesting phenomenon relat
ed to size effect. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
