Based upon land use surveys undertaken in Macau during 1994, this pape
r updates changes in land use between 1972 and 1983 analysed in a prev
ious issue of Land Use Policy. Many of the trends seen in past land us
e in the territory have continued but further intensification and mode
rnization has led to the increase in use of underground areas and a mo
re modern type of mixed residential/commercial use than the previous d
ominant Chinese 'bazaar' type of commercial use with upstairs residenc
es. Finally plans show that by 2005 there is likely to be another mass
ive expansion of reclaimed land with the island of Taipa becoming comp
letely urbanized. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
