Professor Arturo R. Atria was born in 1907 and died in 1998. Since his
years as a medical student he participated in medical teaching and af
ter receiving his MD title he devoted himself to the study, teaching a
nc clinical research in Endocrinology. He founded the first clinical D
epartment of Endocrinology in Chile, at the Hospital del Salvador, and
became a main leader in that field, receiving many post-graduate stud
ents from Chile and several Latinamerican countries, to be formed as e
ndocrinologists under his guidance. A Founder of the Chilean Society o
f Endocrinology and Metabolism, he served as his first President. Duri
ng a very long academic career, Dr. Atria was awarded several distinct
ions and prized, both in chile and abroad, and left a cherished exampl
e of outstanding devotion to teaching and sound clinical research.
