Polyetherimides containing isopropylidene and hexafluoroisopropylidene
groupings were obtained by the interaction of m-phenylenediamine with
the dianhydrides of 2,2-bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]-propane a
nd 2,2-bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl] hexafluoropropane using hi
gh-temperature solution polycyclocondensation in phenolic solvents. Th
e same procedure was used for the preparation of the isopropylidene- a
nd and hexafluoroisopropylidene-containing polyetherimides on the basi
s of 3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxy(diphenyl ether)dianhydride and 2-bis[4-(3-
aminopheno-xy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane. Investigation of the polymers
obtained has demonstrated that the replacement of isopropylidene group
ings for hexafluoroisopropylidene fragments in polyetherimides leads t
o the increasing of the polymers flame-resistance.
