The inability to produce eukaryotic glycoproteins with complex N-linke
d glycans is a major limitation of the baculovirus-insect cell express
ion system. Recent studies have demonstrated that metabolic engineerin
g can be used to extend the glycoprotein processing capabilities of le
pidopteran insect cells. This approach is being used to develop new ba
culovirus-insect cell expression systems that can produce more authent
ic recombinant glycoproteins and obtain new information on insect N-gl
ycosylation pathways.
