Abstract
To investigate the formation mechanism of silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA), the sintering process has been interrupted during t he pot test. The column has been dissected and observed by optical mic roscopy and analysed using the scanning electron microscope with energ y dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) in the laboratory. The main mechan ism of SFCA formation is the reaction of hematite with larnite, calciu m rich calcium ferrite, CaO in magnetite, and the vitreous phase in th e combustion zone and the high temperature oxidation zone. The high te mperature oxidation zone is very important for SFCA formation, especia lly in the sintering of magnetite. IS/1293 (C) 1998 The Institute of M aterials.
