A prediction system was developed by integrating the appropriate knowl
edge base for the channelling phenomenon in the blast furnace. Three c
hannelling mechanisms were considered: breakthrough, formation of void
s in the upper burden, and critical pressure drop. Of the th ree, the
breakthrough mechanism was considered to apply to the current system,
Knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, and validation and ap
plication of the system are discussed with emphasis on channelling pre
diction. The developed system has been successfully applied in the fin
