Hp. Nolting et H. Knopf, REDUCING AGGRESSION AT SCHOOL - MANY PROPOSALS - FEW STUDIES, PSYCHOLOGIE IN ERZIEHUNG UND UNTERRICHT, 45(4), 1998, pp. 249-260
Which strategies for managing aggressive and violent behavior among pu
pils have been put forward and what do we know about their effectivene
ss? The survey concentrates on proposals to be realized by the teacher
s inside the school: (1) school-centered, (2) curriculum-centered, (3)
bully-centered, (4) victim-centered, and (5) multi-level (whole-schoo
l) approaches. Review of literature suggests that empirical studies on
the effectiveness of the proposed strategies are usually lacking. Cle
ar evidence indicating behavioral change in school has been presented
only for multi-level approaches and for particular school conditions.
It is argued that evaluation in school is necessary for several reason
s including discrepancies between conceived strategies and the actual
implementation.
