Both in theory and in practice, there is no definite guidelines as to
the rate (intensity) of heating the thick charge. It has been determin
ed on the basis of the author's own theoretical studies that depending
on the heating parameters there is an accurately defined (rational) v
alue of heating rate which assures the minimum losses of steel for sca
le. Relationships have been derived which enable the calculation of th
e value of this rate. The results of laboratory studies have nearly pe
rfectly confirmed the value of this rate, as well as the value of the
minimum steel loss.
