Cancer incidence and mortality rates among Native Hawaiians remain hig
h despite advances in health care. The incidence of lung cancer are th
e highest among Native Hawaiian women and men. Breast cancer mortality
rates are one of the highest nationally for Native Hawaiian women. Po
ssible responsible factors include 1) cultural barriers, 2) compliance
to standard medical care, 3) accessibility to health care, and 4) the
cost of health care. Improved health promotion and cancer prevention
and control programs are needed. Cancer 1998;83:1865-7. (C) 1998 Ameri
