Abstract
We construct explicit multivortex solutions for the first and second c omplex sine-Gordon equations. The constructed solutions are expressibl e in terms of the modified Bessel and rational functions, respectively . The vorticity-raising and lowering Backlund transformations are inte rpreted as the Schlesinger transformations of the fifth Painleve equat ion. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
