The new combination method of electrode manufacturing for phosphoric a
cid fuel cell has been studied, which takes advantage of the conventio
nal coating and rolling methods. In the combination method, an electro
catalyst slurry is coated upon an electrode support, dried at 225 degr
ees C, subjected to a rolling process, and then to a sintering process
at 350 degrees C in an inert atmosphere. The optimum coating and roll
ing processing conditions of the combination method were obtained when
the thickness of the electrocatalyst layer was 60 mu m, and the rolli
ng degree was 40 mu m. The single cell with an electrode of the combin
ation method showed a good performance as compared with the convention
al methods, and their performance characteristics were discussed as re
lated to the structure state of the electrocatalyst layer. To decide t
he practicability of the combination method, the performance character
istics of the single cells with a large electrode area of 2000 cm(2) w
ere examined. (C) 1998 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.
