A new name, Chloromonas hohamii, is proposed to accommodate a common N
orth American snow alga previously incorrectly referred to as Chloromo
nas polyptera. Chloromonas hohamii differs in having the motile vegeta
tive cells with a cup-shaped chloroplast opening in the anterior end o
f the cell, shorter, narrower, ellipsoidal to elongate to somewhat fus
iform, sexual spores with non-spiralled wall flanges, shorter and narr
ower daughter cells derived from the spores, and it grows in snow of s
ignificantly lower pH and conductivity.
