Irradiation for permethyloligogermanes, Me(Me2Ge)(n)Me (n = 2-5), in C
Cl4-CH3CN in the presence of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) afforded the
corresponding chlorogermanes and hexachloroethane. Fluorescence of DC
A was quenched by the oligogermane with a diffusion-controlled rate. A
mechanism of free-radical chlorination involving oligogermane cation
radicals and a DCA anion radical is proposed for the germanium-germani
um cleavage. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
