J. Moises et al., CANDIDA-PARAPSILOSIS SEPSIS IN A PATIENT ON MAINTENANCE HEMODIALYSIS WITH A HIP-JOINT REPLACEMENT, Nefrologia, 18(4), 1998, pp. 330-332
Infections due to C. parapsilosis are uncommon. Immunodeficiency assoc
iated with hemodialysis is regarded as one of the risk factors for suc
h infections, joint involvement in these cases in extremately rare. We
report a case of a diabetic patient on maintenance hemodialysis who u
nderwent a C. parapsilosis sepsis, coming from an infected prosthetic
hip joint long-term antifungal treatment eliminated the infection, wit
h no need for prosthetic resection. We conclude that a prosthetic hip
joint infected with C. parapsilosis can be successfully treated with l
ong term antifungal treatment, without limiting the patient's quality
of life.
