I. Valoczky et al., USE OF ANAMNESIS AND CLINICAL SIGNS IN DECISION-MAKING REGARDING TREATMENT OF BITCHES WITH CYSTIC ENDOMETRIAL HYPERPLASIA AND PYOMETRA COMPLEX, Magyar allatorvosok lapja, 120(8), 1998, pp. 474-478
The aim of the study was to investigate selected anamnestic and gyneco
logical parameters in bitches with cystic endometrial hyperplasia and
pyometra complex (CEHPC) and to select markers that could facilitate d
ecision-making in the treatment of this condition. The results are bas
ed on monitoring two groups of bitches: one group which was successful
ly treated medically while bitches in the other were subjected to ovar
iohysterectomy. Twenty medium sized bitches with various stages of CEH
PC were monitored. The age of the surgically treated bitches ranged be
tween 4 and 14 years with an average of 8.4 years, while age range of
the medically treated bitches was 1.5-4 years with an average of 2.6 y
ears. Seventy-nine percent of the surgically treated bitches showed cl
inical symptoms for longer than 14 days, which indicated a more chroni
c process. Sixty-seven percent of the medically created bitches had cl
inical symptoms shorter than 14 days. Polydipsia and polyuria were obs
erved in both groups with CEHPC. Inappetence was present mainly in bit
ches which had to be treated surgically. Limping and pain in long bone
s were more frequent in the surgically treated group. Emesis was found
in 28.5% of the surgically treated bitches. Both groups had vaginal d
ischarge and prolonged estrus cycle noted in their anamnesis. Fifty-se
ven percent of the surgically treated and half of the medically treate
d bitches had received hormone therapy previously. Palpation findings
were more varied in the surgically treated animals.
