The Federation of the Seine of the Ligue des droits de l'homme in the
1930's has always shown its opposition to the leadership of this organ
isation. It sees itself in charge of preserving the major principles o
f the Dreyfus Affair League : pacifism, search of political and social
ideal, priority of justice over power duty... To put them into practi
ce, it wants to open the Ligue to the masses by opposition to members
of parliament, especially the radicaux. This may be an infiltration ta
ctic, yet the Seine refuses to exert any power as it would not like to
see the Ligue compromised with the political power. It is, rather, a
left-wing avant-garde recognized by the League's president Victor Basc
h. This position makes sense when the League federates the French left
-wing in the Rassemblement populaire. In due course the Seine chooses
unity. The question of pacifism in L.D.H. confirms this interpretation
. False analyses made believe that this question led to a scission. Ho
wever, the example of the Seine shows that in the L.D.H., dispute does
not mean split.
