Silica-based packings for preparative HPLC, SFC and SMB are today manu
factured with high batch to batch reproducibility and with analytical
performance. Mechanical strength, loadability and chemical stability a
re, among others, the parameters which influence to a large extent a p
roblem-free process and good total economy in the purification step. I
n this paper these properties will be described together with the manu
facturing methods for spherical, totally porous particles and the chem
ical methods for surface modification of the particles.
