Abstract
Longitudinal and rotational coupled vibration of viscoelastic bar with a concentrated mass at its end is investigated. It is shown that in a particular case when the bar is rigid, the system reduces to that of a simple pendulum. Initially the differential equations governing the behavior of the system are derived. Then, the existence of periodic so lution for this system is investigated using the Schauder fixed-point theorem. Finally, a few numerical examples are considered and using ph ase plane trajectories their behaviors are presented. (C) 1998 Elsevie r Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
