Lf. Miron et al., TRANSNATIONAL MIGRANTS, CULTURAL CITIZENSHIP, AND THE POLITICS OF LANGUAGE IN CALIFORNIA, Educational policy, 12(6), 1998, pp. 659-681
In this article, the authors explore, through the notions aculrural ci
tizenship, how newly arrived immigrant students in California seek to
carve out social space. They argue that students in Santa Ana, Califor
nia both embrace and challenge the prevailing ideologies on language e
mbedded in Proposition 227, the so-called ''English for the Children''
initiative. Students here are at least moderately successful in explo
iting the ''translocality '' of cities like Santa Ana to become polygl
ot citizens in America.
