Two individuals with aphasia were taught to communicate in simulated e
mergency situations using a situation-specific training strategy. A si
ngle-subject experimental design was used to determine the efficacy of
the treatment procedure. The results indicated that both individuals
improved within 10 treatment sessions with variable levels of generali
zation and lasting effects at 4 weeks following treatment. These preli
minary data provide evidence that a situation-specific approach has pr
omise as an efficacious technique to facilitate functional communicati
ve outcomes in patients with aphasia.
