A scheme is proposed for the generation of motional Schrodinger cat st
ates with controllable relative phase of an ion trapped in a two-dimen
sional harmonic potential and driven resonantly by two laser beams pro
pagating along the X and Y directions, respectively. The scheme can al
so be used to generate other cat states.
