Magnetic polarization of Au layers in Au/M (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) metall
ic multilayers are studied by Sn-119 Mossbauer spectroscopy. Sn-119 Mo
ssbauer probes are embedded in the Au layers of Au/M multilayers which
are made by ultra-high vacuum evaporation. Sn-119 Mossbauer spectra o
f all Au/M multilayers show magnetic hyperfine fields though the magni
tude is different among these three systems, which indicates that the
Au layers are magnetically polarized by the ferromagnetic layers. When
Au layer thickness is thin, the Sn-119 probes in the Au/Co multilayer
s experience the largest hyperfine field. From the Mossbauer spectra w
ith applied fields at 5 K, the direction of the hyperfine field is det
ermined to be both parallel and antiparallel to the applied field dire
ction, suggesting the oscillatory behavior of the magnetic polarizatio
n of the Au layer conduction electrons. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
