The results obtained in our laboratory on the characterization of two
families of ionically-conducting membranes, i.e. poly(ethylene oxide)-
based and gel-type polymer electrolytes, are reviewed here. Particular
attention is devoted to the description of the conditions of the lith
ium electrode interface and to the approaches which may be undertaken
to improve its stability. The most promising applications of the two c
lasses of polymer electrolytes are also outlined. (C) 1998 Society of
