We experienced an atypical case of pityriasis versicolor with a unique
clinical appearance and undescribed mycological features. Although Ma
lassezia sp. was cultured from the keratotic material, the fungal elem
ents observed in the material were not readily identified as Malassezi
a. The diagnosis was established with the aid of immunohistochemical a
nd ultrastructural studies with the aetiological agent being identifie
d as M. globosa.
