The alkyl 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,4-methanonaphthalenes (THMNs) are propo
sed as model compounds for studying the influence of molecular shape o
n reorientational dynamics in liquids. They possess a rigid molecular
frame to which different alkyl chains are attached, The synthesis of s
everal alkyl THMNs is described, and the rotational motions of specifi
c C-13-H-1 vectors have been evaluated by the measurement of C-13 rela
xation data. The results for the differently-substituted THMNs were co
mpared to each other, The velocity of the reorientational motions coul
d be related to the molecular shape.
