In 1983 and 1993 over 1,400 school children in San Marcos, Texas, were
surveyed concerning their attitudes toward geography as a school subj
ect and as one of the social studies. Although on average the children
in both years considered geography their least favorite on a List of
school subjects and gave it a mediocre ranking compared to other socia
l studies, some statistically significant improvement in the popularit
y of geography occurred over the decade. This research tentatively ass
ociates this increased popularity with more active learning environmen
ts.
