Abstract
We study the dynamics of scroll vortices in excitable reaction-diffusi on systems analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that intrinsic three-dimensional instability of a straight scroll leads to the forma tion of helicoidal structures. This behavior originates from the compe tition between the scroll curvature and unstable core dynamics. We sho w that the obtained instability persists even beyond the meander core instability of the two-dimensional spiral wave. [S1063-651X(98)06310-7 ].
