Dichloromethane extracts from twigs of Virola surinamensis (Myristicac
eae) showed in vitro trypanosomicidal activity against trypomastigote
form of Trypanosoma cruzi. The extract, fractionated by preparative ci
rcular chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromato
graphy yielded two steroids, two lignans, five flavonoids, and one pol
yketide. Among the isolated compounds, the lignans presented the highe
st trypanosomicidal activity.
