Abstract
The disposal of radioactive waste containing highly active elements wi th long half-lives - especially minor actinides - has always been a ma jor problem in the nuclear power industry. A promising new approach is to transmute them by neutron bombardment into elements that decay mor e rapidly, using neutrons generated in existing reactors. Preliminary trials have shown promising results.
