Abstract
Transfection has facilitated a functional analysis of transcriptional processes in the human malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum, provid ing the first fascinating glimpses into the mechanisms regulating para site development and pathogenicity. Here we review our rapidly evolvin g knowledge of what constitutes a promoter, what factors regulate prom oter activity and how this activity affects the manifestation of the d isease.
