High-spin states have been populated in Xe-54(119) via the Mo-96(Al-27
,p3n) reaction at 133 MeV, using the JUROSPHERE gamma-ray spectrometer
to record triple gamma-ray coincidences, The known level scheme has b
een significantly extended and several band crossings identified. In p
articular, the nu h(11/2) yrast band has been extended to I-pi = (83/2
(-)) and shows features which are consistent with those of smooth band
termination at high spin. Theoretical results for Xe-119 at high spin
are discussed within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calc
ulations, together with results for Xe-117. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
