Abstract
The shape of two-dimensional solitary beams propagating in photorefrac tive media with an externally applied field is studied. The analytical results indicate that, for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearitie s, radially symmetric self-channeled beams do not exist. Some recent e xperiments are interpreted in light of the present results. (C) 1998 O ptical Society of America.
