K. Siddiqui, AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS, POVERTY AND ECOLOGICAL CRISIS - CASE-STUDY OF CENTRAL-AMERICAN COUNTRIES, Economic and political weekly, 33(39), 1998, pp. 128-136
At the roots of socio-economic and ecological crisis it: the Central A
merican countries are development policies that have favoured agricult
ural production for export over production for local needs and intensi
ve exploitation of natural resources for foreign exchange and short-te
rm profit rather than for sustainable use. Such policies favoured larg
e landowners, foreign corporations and banks over the majority of the
people of Central America. The Central American development experience
could provide a useful lesson for other third world countries.
