Abstract
Efforts to increase the Canadian fibre supply have provided a basis fo r the investigation of Canadian Industrial Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) a s a possible supplementary fibre resource for the pulp and paper indus try. The objectives of this study are: to increase the knowledge base of non-wood fibres (i.e. fundamental science), and to demonstrate the potential of hemp fibre as being an additional resource for pulp and p aper production (i.e., applied science). With reference to cell struct ure and material strength, hemp has demonstrated itself to be similar to both hardwood and softwood tree species. This study focused on the composition and chemical pulping of Canadian Industrial Hemp.
