We show that the microstructure of 45 degrees grain boundaries in epit
axial YBaCuO together with the d(x2-y2) symmetry of the superconductin
g wave function accounts for the measured magnetic field modulation pa
tterns of the critical currents. Our results resolve the conflict betw
een contradictory observations of other authors and unfold a consisten
t picture of d-wave-symmetry of the YBaCuO superconducting ground stat
e. Evidence for currentless junctions with a phase difference of pi is
given.
