A cylindrical vibrating fluidized bed, 148 mm in diameter, was set up
to study the behavior of the separation of solid particles in a dense
medium. Optimum operating parameters and construction of the air distr
ibutor were obtained experimentally. The major factors associated with
separating efficiency and the stability of the fluidized bed are disc
ussed. Based. on the experiments, the largest ratio of the volume of t
he particles to be separated to the bed volume is also determined. (C)
