Abstract
New results are presented for the reflectivity of a buried waveguide a t a realistic depth incident on a coated facet. Diffractive effects ar e shown to be significant enough to prevent previously reported two-la yer coatings meeting the practical specifications for high performance semiconductor optical amplifiers.
