Abstract
First studies of the structure of the valence region in the conversion spectrum of the 1.56-keV ( M1+E2) transition in Hg-201 have been carr ied out. Physicochemical environment has been found to affect substant ially the local electron density of impurity mercury atoms. The mechan isms responsible for the electronic-structure rearrangement are discus sed. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7834(98)00909-5].
