This paper describes a new approach to solve the problem of intersecti
ng features extraction. Feature extraction is important from several s
tandpoints-automated process planning, NC machining, automated assembl
y and virtual prototyping. Feature extraction reported in the literatu
re indicates limited success mostly in extracting a partial List of no
n-intersecting features. There has not been much success in the extrac
tion of intersecting features. Techniques must continue to be develope
d to extract intersecting features and identify them as combinations o
f standard features. Our methods of intersecting feature extraction ar
e different from current methods in that they operate on 2D CAD as inp
ut data, thus obviating analysis in complex 3D space. (C) 1998 Elsevie
