A synthesis procedure for preparing palm oil fatty acid additives (POF
A's) is described. The performance of these acids in carbon black (CB)
filled natural rubber (NR) compounds was examined. The incorporation
of POFA's is found to improve mechanical properties of CB filled NR co
mpounds, especially below a concentration of 2 phr. Scanning electron
microscopy (SEM) indicates that POFA's improved filler dispersion whil
e swelling measurement tests show that POFA's have some effect on cros
slink density.
