Recent developments in fast computed tomography (CT) scanning and magn
etic resonance (MR) imaging techniques have enabled accurate, noninvas
ive diagnosis of both acute and chronic thromboembolism, This chapter
reviews the radiographic, CT, and MR imaging features of these disease
s; discusses current thinking regarding the roles of these modalities
in the diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolic disease; and suggests a d
iagnostic algorithm for incorporating fast CT scanning into the evalua
tion of patients with suspected acute pulmonary emboli.
