The example of the Rubeland lime works is used to describe the change
from an uneconomic producer of hard-burnt lime for the carbide industr
y to a cost-effective producer of limestone and lime products with a w
ide product range. Full utilization (put into effect after German re-u
nification) of the limestone material extracted in the quarry includin
g utilization of the stockpiled material from earlier years, is illust
rated with aid of process and quantity pow sheets. The small-size lime
stone is now processed in a Marz kiln for small-size limestone, in the
production of limestone meal, grit and chippings for flue gas desulph
urization, and in the production of limestone sands for ore preparatio
n in the steel industry. A report is also given of the environmental f
riendliness and resource conservation of the present production system
.
