We have developed a relatively simple model for the dynamics of fast i
gnition. The model provides the scaling laws for the minimum beam ener
gy required for ignition and for the power beam in terms of the fuel d
ensity rho(0) and of the ion range R. The model explains the discrepan
cies reported in the literature between 2D simulations and 1D estimati
ons based on the consideration of a preformed hot spot. Besides, it pr
edicts the scaling E-0(min) proportional to R-2 for the minimum energy
