The actual concept of the HIDIF-linac is based on a number of Bi+-sour
ces followed by low-frequency RFQs. These beams are subsequently funne
led and accelerated to the final energy of 48 MeV/u (10 GeV). The funn
eling process combines two beams with current I-O and frequency f(O) t
o one linac with 2I-O and 2*f(O). In the ideal case this could be don
e without emittance growth. In this way the 25 mA beams from the Bi+-s
ources are funneled to a 400mA linac beam for storage ring injection.
The paper describes the design work on the crucial points of this inje
ctor concept and discusses the status of experiments. (C) 1998 Elsevie
