Abstract
Final ion propagation in the space charge compensated scheme (ITEP) is contrasted to Hylife II scenario. A fully electromagnetic particle in cell-Monte Carlo code (PIC-MCC) is considered for the ballistic trans port of intense ion beams in a reaction chamber field with Flibe gas s urrounding a pellet with a thermonuclear fuel in it. For the latter, w e identify a partial beam neutralization only through electron backgro und. The former displays an acceptable focusing on the pellet. The bac kground electron temperature has a significant influence on beam minim um radius. Transverse emittance is given specific attention. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
