Abstract
An evaluation of the current state of development and implementation o f environmental management systems (EMS) indicated that Canadian pulp and paper companies had variable but, on average, well-developed EMS p rotocols. In general, these companies had appropriate organization, qu alified personnel and adequate environmental management information sy stems. At earlier stages of development were the EMS design and review procedures. Five factors exerting a statistically significant influen ce on individual companies' EMS were identified.
