The regularities in the creation of outstanding works of painting and
poetry, as well as scientific discoveries over a period 1400-1800 was
estimated quantitatively. The occurrence of an about 10-year periodici
ty of the creative activity in West-European and Chinese painting, poe
try and science is shown. As a rule, the peaks of creative work in Chi
na agree with those in West Europe. Since the Chinese civilization was
not directly connected with the European one, the effect of a synchro
nizing external factor is proposed. It is assumed that variations in s
olar activity serve as such a factor. The study is based on historical
data on painting, poetry, and scientific discoveries in the period fr
om 1400 to 1800.
